I am rebuilding my FJ40 75 (12/74) 4 speed, but I have some issues with the 4 speed transfer case. Then in August of 1980 we saw the change to the split transfer case and updated four-speed transmission, which was considerably smoother and quieter than it’s predecessor. When you pull that drum off, fluid will come out unless you’ve already drained the transfer case. As I said this is new to me FJ40, so I have much to learn. They are made in Australia and cost about $1200 USD. On the transfer case itself, the main part that needs to be swapped is the 4WD mode shaft housing which is held on by 4 bolts. Wrench hammered what seemed a long time (many seconds) then the filler plug finally gave in.
